Last week the research in the framework of the OWI-project has been awarded by EWEA for having the best scientific poster in Denmark during its annual four day conference. The poster handles about the first offshore tests and measurements performed at Belwind.

Dr. Ir. Thomas Geernaert was honoured with the prestigious Photonics21 Student Innovation Award 2012 during the annual meeting of Photonics21: the European technology platform for photonics. He received this award for his “outstanding research contribution in the domain of micro-optic fibre sensors” and for the industrial impact of his research.

BruWIND organized successful its first event in December 2011, attended by 80 people, of which 40 representatives from industry.

The Brussels Wind Energy Research Institute is joining the efforts of several research groups in Brussels active in the field of wind energy. With 3 participating institutions and 11 research groups, our research program covers several aspects of modern wind turbine technology. Our partner universities and research groups will be happy to meet you and inform you about their ongoing activities and projects within the Brussels Wind Energy Research Institute

Within the Offshore Wind Infrastructure Project we will perform a continuous monitoring campaign during 3 months on an offshore wind turbine near the Belgian coast. This will allow us to investigate the influence of waves and wind on the dynamic behavior of offshore wind turbines and their foundations.

Researchers within Bruwind started to investigate the possible use of small wind turbines within the City. Urban environments are however at first sight not very interesting for windturbines, as the little wind in the city is usually very variable both in speed and wind direction. This makes harvesting the energy from the wind rather difficult.

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Erasmushogeschool Brussel and l’Université Libre de Bruxelles have set the objective to take a leading position in the field of research on wind energy in Belgium. An important instrument for achieving this goal is the launch of the Brussels Wind Energy Institute, BruWind.
